Vail was founded by Pete Seibert and Earl Eaton in 1962, between the town of Eagle, Colorado and Vail Pass, Colorado which was named after Charles Vail, designer of the highway that passed through the valley. Unlike other ski towns the town of Vail was created by the Vail ski resort. While roaming the mountains, Seibert and Eaton discovered a peak that was the perfect location for a ski and base area for a resort, they first called this peak "No-name Mountain", but it would eventually become Vail. In a short 7 years, Vail had grown to become the most popular ski resort in Colorado, and a village had started forming at the base, near the gondola, which had been replaced since its opening. If you are coming to Colorado from sea level, keep in mind that Vail is at a slightly lower altitude than the near-by Summit County ski resorts. Today the Vail ski resort encompasses over six miles of trails.
