Top 4 Archeological Sites to visit in Greece
Other than the Parthenon :)
Before I traveled to Greece, the only archeological site I could think of was the Parthenon in Athens. Although it is a worthwhile visit, you are guaranteed to fight the crowds to get a glimpse of its glory.
There are many, other sites worth your time when taking a trip to Greece and are accessible by bus or boat from Athens as a ‘jump off’ point. Many even make a great day trip! So, pack your socks and get ready for a breakdown of the top 4 archeological sites in Greece.
Temple of Poseidon
This site is astonishing as it is appropriately placed on a cliff overlooking the ocean. The temple itself and the surrounding nature is beautiful.
This Temple is a day trip distance from Athens. There are many choices to get there such as renting a car or paying for a tour. Another option is to take the bus out there.
2. Oracle of Delphi
The Oracle of Delphi is another beautiful site tucked up in the mountains. This archeological site can also be made as a day trip from Athens. One cannot go wrong with taking a tour, driving, or taking the bus. Parking may be hard if one is driving, so having a bus to drop you off may be best!
This is a very large site with multiple areas to explore such as the Roman Agora, Temple of Apollo, Treasuries, and a Stadium. Unlike the Temple of Poseidon, this site requires walking a good amount on rough terrain from site to site. There is also a museum there which is also greatly worth one’s time.
3. The Temple of Demeter at Eleusis
The Temple of Demeter is a rather large site that although does not have many large structures still standing, is filled with wonder. There are many mysteries behind the site as the Temple of Demeter was only available to those who were initiated and sworn to secrecy.
The Temple of Demeter will not underwhelm as, are all places in Greece truly are, the archeological site is mystical and beautiful.
The Temple of Demeter is outside Athens and can be reached by car, bus, or with a tour group similar to the other sites mentioned above.
4. Olympia
Olympia is a very large archeological site and its own municipality. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and was where the first ever Olympics were held. It is amazing to take in the ruins of the temples and statues that once stood as well as imagine the events that were held in the stadiums that still stand today there.
Olympia is farther away from Athens and does not make for an easy day trip as it is a 3.5 hour drive. Renting a car is recommended as Olympia is in the Peloponnese region of Greece and not well connected by public transportation.
A bus from Athens is an option however the journey could take 6+ hours and would require connections.
Olympia is a very under-traveled site for many international tourists. If you crave including an element of your trip ithat is a slower pace, the cozy and sleepy town of Olympia will welcome you with a warm embrace.
