8 Hour Layover in Frankfurt, Germany

Frankfurt has a very large international airport. If it is not your final destination, it is often a common layover when reaching other countries around the world. I had a layover in Frankfurt with ample time to explore the city 3 times in my life!

It was not until my layover to Venice in 2023 that I finally took the opportunity to see the city.

It can be a bit scary leaving an airport during a layover, but I assure you that with proper planning you can see some major sights with time to spare. Taking advantage of long layovers is a great way to travel/see new sights that you never intended to at first.

I have broken down the logistics of how to leave the airport and get out into the city below:

Frankfurt am Main, Germany's Uhrtürmchen - Clock tower turret in Frankfurt Germany

Frankfurt am Main, Germany's Uhrtürmchen (clock turret)

  1. Once you land in Frankfurt, it is time to head out! If you did not check luggage, you can store your bag here: https://www.frankfurt-airport.com/en/airport-guide/check-in-and-luggage/luggage-services-.htm. The fee for storing ‘regular baggage’ over 4 hours is €10.50, which is about $12.00 USD.

  2. Make your way to the ground floor of Terminal 1 of the airport to reach the S-Bahn Train. You can then download/purchase tickets on your phone using this app:https://www.rmv.de/c/en/shop/more-purchase-options/rmvgo-mobile-ticket

  3. Then take the S8 or S9 line. It took us about 25-30 minutes to get into the city. Here is the link to the Frankfurt Airport local public transportation: https://www.frankfurt-airport.com/en/transport-and-parking/by-train/local-public-transportation.html

I recommend carrying a day bag with some fresh euros, a bottle of water, and of course, some extra socks because you never know :).

You are now set to explore the city center so the question is,

Where to go?

Frankfurt Cathedral (Imperial Cathedral of Saint Bartholomew): You can see the sights of it from the outside and is also free to go into. There are many tour options online as well if the time during your layover allows.

Walk by the Main River and enjoy the views.

Eat a pretzel (and have a beer if you fancy).

And that just all may be the time you have on your layover. We went back to the airport about 2 hours before our flight to provide some wiggle room, which is always recommended.

Enjoy the rest of your flight!
